Bendable wood

I have found a technique developed by Snijlab, to bend wood or plexiglas. You cut the wood in several lines over an area of about 2 cm.
Termen:

bend, hinge

Machines:

lasercutter

Materials:

wood

Moeilijkheidsgraad:

Beginner

Training tijd:
0.50Hours
Step by step instructions:

Make a design and determine the area that you want to bend. For bending material of about 3-4 mm thick, you need a bending area of min. 20 mm. Draw rows of lines of 40 mm long, alternating like bricks, with 1.5 mm in between rows. You can also copy-paste it from my design file. (Take only the green lines).

Set the lasercutter so that you cut all the way through the material.

Use wood that is not too coarse. Finer fibres last longer. MDF also works remarkably well, and so does plexiglass.

Failures:

The wood breaks easily. I wonder how long it lasts.

We should play a bit with different distances between lines, see what happens.
